Barnegat Branch Trail
The Barnegat Branch Trail is a rail trail in New Jersey.
The trail occupies a 15.6-mile (25.1 km) abandoned rail corridor in Ocean County, New Jersey, that extends from Barnegat Township to Toms River.[1] The trail, is being built along the abandoned Barnegat Branch Division of the Central Railroad of New Jersey, which stopped service on the line in 1977.[2] The trail will be developed in five phases. The trail will become the ninth longest trail in the state, when completed.
- Phases I and II connect CR-554 (Bay Avenue) in Barnegat Township to CR-532 (Wells Mill Road) in Waretown; a length of about 3.1-mile (5.0 km). This portion does not yet connect with Phase III.
- Phase III connects Cedar Creek at Dudley Park in Bayville to Maryland Ave in Berkeley Township; a length of about 2.0-mile (3.2 km). This portion does not yet connect with Phases I/II.
- Phase IV would extend the northern end of Phase I/II from CR-532 in Waretown to the border with Lacey Township; a length of about 1.5-mile (2.4 km).
- Phase V would extend the southern end of Phase IV to Oyster Creek; a length of about 2.4-mile (3.9 km).
Controversy
A 1.9-mile (3.1 km) segment of the trail right-of-way has been the focus of an ongoing battle to build a bypass road for Route 9. Lacey Township officials are proposing a shared road-walkway for this section of the trail.[3]
